Can my dogs get food poisining from raw chicken?

Written by Luvs Dogs on December 11th, 2008

ellenann87 asked:

My neighbor saw someone throw a raw chicken ****** into my yard, but by the time she told me the dos had already eaten it. Now one of the dogs is having fairly constant belching and passing gas both of which are extremely foul smelling. Neither dog wanted to eat their daily meal this evening. Should I be alarmed?

it probably isnt good, and if they keep seeming unhealthy, you should take your dog to the vet

GET THEM TO THE VET!!!!! Think of dogs like people. If you ate a raw chicken, it wouldn’t be good at all. Do not try to stop the vomiting, and maybe turn on a fan or two until you get him to a vet or an emergency clinic.

There is a chance they are trying to poison your dogs. Better have them checked. It sounds fishy that some one would throw raw meat over the fence.

I don’t understand why someone would do that. You have to protect your dogs so that people don’t cause them harm. They might be ok, although they probably will have upsets stomachs. Don’t leave them unsupervised in front where someone could give them food that makes them sick. Observe them closely for the next few hours and take them to the vet if they appear to be ill.

Yeah they can get food poisoning and whatever parasites the raw chicken may contain. They say dogs stomach’s are tougher than ours, well that may be for wild dogs, but it simply isn’t the case for domestic dogs. That’s why they can even get digestion problem from simply switching their food. I’d say be concerned and contact a veterinarian.

Normally, raw chicken will not hurt your dog. Salmonella rarely affects dogs because the bacteria in their intestines is stronger than humans and their intestinal tract is much shorter than humans so bad bacteria does not have enough time to cause problems. Remember, before dogs were domesticated they ONLY ate raw meat. Their bodies are made to be able to do so. In fact, raw diets are highly recommended because it is more natural for a dog. However, theyre not very popular because it is expensive to feed your dog a raw diet.
In your case, I would be a little alarmed because someone threw the chicken in your yard and now your dogs arent behaving normally. This may be because the chicken was bad and the person thought theyd feed it to a dog instead of throwing it away.
Regardless, just call your vet or the emergency vet clinic in your area if the vet is not open and explain to them the situation (if you do not know the ER vet #, it is usually on the voice recording for your vet)
