How do I get my dogs to stop digging holes in the yard?

Written by Luvs Dogs on November 3rd, 2008

jesshispet asked:

I have 3 dogs, German shepard mixes ( the papa, the mama and their baby) and every chance they get, they chase lizards, skunks, squirrels, whatever comes into the yard and if it burrows into the ground they go after it. Sometimes the holes are big enough to bury a truck in. They are very sweet dogs but obviously not too bright. What can I do to discourage the digging? Should I call Cesar Milan, the dog whisperer?

You cant stop them, it’s in their nature.

If they are constantly digging in the same place, I suggest maybe putting chicken wire (or any other kind of wire,) and put the sand/grass back over it. next time your charming little dog tries to dig, the wire will stop them and they won’t be able to get thru. It might take a little while for them to realise, but it has worked before,.. i hope it works for you though! good luck!

Not too bright? German Shepherd is spelled German S-h-e-p-h-e-r-d.
They are determined to get the vermin no matter how deep the hole. Dogs do what dogs do.

You can take them out on a lease and attempt to teach them to “leave it”.

Teach them to “come” until a point that you can “recall” them every time even when not on a leash.

or Let them have their fun and manage the holes.
