How do you get your dogs to go through the dog door?

Written by Luvs Dogs on December 11th, 2008

boggle asked:

We just put in a dog door. One of my dogs will go through if you hold the flap open. The other one is scared to death and freaks out if I get him near it or try to help him through.

Try tying a treat — pig’s ear or bone or something — to a string and pull the string through….when the dog sees the treat he wants go through that door, he’s likely to do whatever it takes to get the treat…

…oh and be sure that after he’s overcome that fear of the door, that you definitely let him have the treat!! :) And lots of praise…

Go outside and call them. They will catch on in a hurry that the only way theat they can get to you is through that hole. You could show them a treat and then go outside. They will figure it out quick enough.

First give your dog a treat then stand on the other side of the door and show your dog the treat do this a couple of times. then throw the treat out the dog door and do this a couple of times. And if ur dog likes to follow you…..take a treat and show it to him then walk outside then shut the door before he can get out….see if he goes through the dog door. If this doesnt work….well I dont know

i would just put him on a leash and then bring him closer to the dog door, and then after he calms down in that spot you go closer and closer, but ever time you get closer make sure he calms down before he gets evan closer, then have him go threw it and give him treats every time he clams down. Basically just let him no it won’t hurt him! Good Luck!

When we got the doggie door put in our back door, the vet told me the best thing to do was leave the dog on the inside and then go outside and open the flap and stick your head thru and try to coax the dog thru…..I did it a few times and held the door open for him and he did well, but when i left the flap down and called him he wouldn’t go near it. I then lifted the flap a little and called him thru and he got used to the feeling of the “flap” on his body as he went thru….it took awhile, but don’t give up! And i also agree with other users, treats help!…..
