How do you train a dog to not be jealous of other dogs around her owner?

Written by Luvs Dogs on March 9th, 2009

jinxwinx asked:

My golden retreiver will not allow other dogs to come near me (except my other golden) in the dog park and outside. I can not even go up to them anymore! I try time outs, but it is very hard to get her attention and the other dogs’ owners freak out thinking that she will hurt their dog. Any ideas?

It’s not jealousy so much as insecurity. I’d suggest reading Cesar Milan’s book, he has lots of ideas on how to make your dog feel better. Extra exercise and stricter rules usually do the trick, but he’s a pro and his tips will be helpful.

give the other dogs attention if you go up to them but make sure your dog gets just a little more or special attention like maybe a treat right before you go up to the others. but dont punish her unless she does something bad like growling or barking at others.

If your dog decides who is and isn’t allowed to be near you, then you are *not* the leader / dominant one in the relationship. Your dog is making the decisions for you.

Start with NILIF (Nothing in Life is Free) training to regain your role as the “dominant dog” in your home. You need to do subtle things to stay at the top of the pecking order. Some of the things are controlling the walks - not letting your dog forge ahead on the lead; going through doors first; making your dog wait and sit to be fed; not giving attention when your dog demands it - only on your terms.
is a good start for NILIF training.

As for the immediate problem of jealousy around other dogs, do not let your dog get away with this.

- When you want to approach another dog, make your dog sit, or even better, lay down, and stay. Put her into the position if she does not do it, and hold her collar with one hand.

- Be stern with her when she tries to lunge or get toward the other dog. Use leash / collar corrections or voice corrections.

- Position yourself between her and the other dog; correct her for trying to pass you to get at the other dog; and pay attention to the other dog using a happy, friendly voice.

This is actually a difficult, but simple problem. I use to deal with this issue with my German Shepherd, and then a friend showed me how to do it. Put your dog in a down stay, and move to the other dog, make sure you stay between the 2, and it shouldn’t be a great distance, no more than maybe 4-6 feet between you and your dog in the down stay. Once you have petted the other dog for a few minutes, return to your dog and pet and praise him for being good. Its easier to deminstrate than to explain here.
