How to kill birds that eat my dogs food and drink my dogs water?

Written by Luvs Dogs on January 15th, 2009

help please asked:

I know that birds carry things that could hurt my dog. I feel sorry for my dog that has to eat/drink after these birds. The bird droppings are everywhere including in my dogs food and water. I have tried the fake Owls and streamers and nothing works.

If you must feed the dog outside, keeping the birds away is as simple as getting a plastic owl from the lawn and garden store and put it somewhere near the dogs food. Every week or so move it to a new position. Hang it from a tree branch. Boaters use these to keep ducks and seagulls off of their boats.

The dog should be fed inside… That makes the problem easily solved.

Feed the dog. Once its done eating remove the food. Also with the water place it in a different container. The birds already know where the water is and its always available.

Don’t leave food out longer than 30 min. if he doesn’t eat it take it away. The dog will eventually learn that it needs to eat its food fast.

You need to find out why birds are going into backyard. Remove any type of batthing water sources and anything that would attract the birds in your backyard. Chances are the food will eliminate the birds.

If this doesn’t bother the neighbors, I got rid of ducks from my pool by using an air horn everyday until they left. Worked like a charm!

The birds have learned that there is always a water and food source in your backyard. You are right in assuming that birds can make your dog sick. Birds carry many parasites and disease that are deadly to dogs and humans. You can’t just leave the food or water out if they’re an outside dog anyway because besides birds there are parasites and rodents that will make your dog sick that also will eat dog food. First, you could try leaving the dog food out for 15 minutes each meal and taking it away. If the birds still eat the food then you have to feed the dog inside.

Keep your dog inside your house. Dogs are considered pack animals. You are your dog’s pack. That is why dogs belong inside the home with their people. If you have him for a pet, wouldn’t he be a better pet with you. Try crate-training, if you can and that way, you can feel comfortable about him being inside the house. Otherwise, I suppose you could supply the birds with lots and lots of bird feed where ever the dog can’t get at it. This would also provide amusement for your dog, watching the birds while he is out there. Maybe he likes the birds by his food, otherwise he would chase them away. Really - you already have the best bird deterant - the dog. So, why is there food left over if he is happy? Our dogs would eat anything we left for them, and all of it.
