What can happen if your dogs arent registered?

Written by Luvs Dogs on January 19th, 2009

wildheart asked:

Please I am trying to talk my husband into getting our dogs registered because it is the law. He said “ive never had any dogs registered and nothing has happened”. What can happen if they find out our dogs arent registered? I need to know so I can talk him into it.

You mean licensed? It is the law. It proves your dogs have their rabies vaccinations and it means they get identified and returned to you if they get loose and are picked up by Animal Control. You get fined if they get picked up are not licensed.

nothing will happen. I have 4 dogs and not one of them is registered. As long as you are up to date on their shots, and have proof you are fine. I have had my dogs get out and get picked up by the pound, they never once asked for registration. The city only wants you to register them so they can make you pay a fee every year, and track how many dogs you have. That is the reason why I keep mine unregistered, where I live you can only have 2. What the city doesn’t know won’t hurt me :)

Registering them makes it easier to find you should they get picked up by animal control. Some counties will charge you extra to retrieve your dog from the pound should it get picked up AND make you pay to get them out AND make you register them at that time. It makes that bill a little harder to swallow

I know, we lost our dog last July 5th because of all the fireworks. He DUG out under the fence (he was outside at 5 pm in the afternoon and was only out for 20 minutes, but the fireworks freaked him out sooooo bad, he escaped). So please don’t say, losing my dog would never happen. Leashes break, dogs can dig, jump, sneak out the door.

It’s not THAT expensive and you are right - it’s the law ;)

I agree with you and just got my bill to re-register our dog and will be adding our two other dogs on there as well.

You could get fined if you are caught. It is unlikely, but if for some reason your neighbors complain about your dogs the humane society or police may ask for your dogs registration. This happened to a friend of mine kind of freakish. Additionally as mentioned earlier if your dog gets out and picked up by the pound/ dog catcher they will charge you more to get your dog out, plus a fine, plus the registration… and if your dog does not have an ID with a licenses registration depending on where you live and what shelter he ends up at they will not hold the dog very long. They will hold on to a tagged registered dog twice as long as an unlicensed one. Truthfully if you keep a tight reign on your dogs no one may every now, but it is definitely the what if scenarios that can be horrific.

It really depends on the laws/bylaws/regulations in force in your city.

Conditions I’ve seen in different states here in Australia include:

Council officers can enter your property and seize unregistered dogs. Your rights to claim them back can vary from non-existent to paying a fine plus the registration fee you thought you avoided.

Unregistered dogs found roaming are put down earlier than registered dogs unless they have other identification (in that council, it was 7 days for registered dogs to be claimed, 3 days for unregistered dogs.

You really need to read the laws applicable to you, and balance the worst case for each clause against the cost of registering your dogs.
