What dogs are good for someone who is very busy?

Written by Luvs Dogs on November 15th, 2008

TinaB asked:

I am a lawyer living in an apartment in nyc. I would like to get a dog because I always had dogs when I was growing up, but I need a dog that can be by itself of v. long periods of time - i.e 10 pm on weekdays (I would of course get a dog walker ). Any suggestions?

Stuffed dog.

Dogs need social interaction with their owners. All day, everyday. Dogs are a commitment! Get a goldiefish :)
Edit– Gosh you people, what’s with all the thumbs down?

Well you’d probably want an older dog then because baby dogs ALWAYS want attention and they **** to be left alone…mine always used to cry when we left him…but as they get older they start to get used to it.

A cat may be much better for you. Dogs need social contact with their ‘pack members’ and if you’re literally gone all day, you’d be dealing with a bored dog who most likely will have separation anxiety–and start wrecking your home when left alone.

Dogs need a lot of contact. Your lifestyle doesn’t seem to offer the amount of time they’d actually need.

I wouldn’t get a dog if you’re really busy, I’m afraid to say. Dogs need tons of love and attention, and if you can’t give it they’ll feel unloved.
I would suggest a cat. They are independent, and can stay alone without going crazy, but if you choose the right one they are very affectionate.

Hrm. Well, first off, for obvious reasons a pup probably is not your best bet, due to the intense initial outlay of time and energy. Even if you have a dogwalker, the odds are good that the pup would bond more with them than with you.

You could try getting in touch with your local humane society, and explain to them that you want a nice, calm, mature companion animal. They could keep an eye peeled for the ideal match for you.

Also, have you considered a kitty? Tuxedo cats (black n white) are very friendly little guys, often similar to dogs in temperament (I know, because I have one!). Cats have the advantage of being more independent; they don’t demand high energy attention when you come home tired from a long day of earning the kibble!
Best luck!

I would actually suggest a cat as well.
Dogs are social animals, and pack animals.
They tend not to do well in situations where they only get to see their owner for a few hours per day, with little to no contact from the owner.
Even with a dog walker, I still wouldn’t advise getting a dog, until you personally have the time for one. Also being left alone could cause the dog to get bored and destroy furniture, or develop behavioural problems.

Can I be honest here? What’s the point of getting a dog? Having one while growing up is not a great reason.

I’m not a big fan of the “weekend custody” dogs. They are typically some of the worst behaved dogs I’ve met. I have a friend who bought a gorgeous standard poodle. I cannot stand being around this dog. They’ve sent it for training, put it in daycare every day, and try to do what’s right, but it’s still an unruly beast. They have no time to keep up on training or to give it activities, so the dog is a monster.

I would say to find a few breeds that look interesting, and then use the national breed club to find resopnsible breeders. See if they feel that a dog will work with your lifestyle and go from there.

GL!

A dog from a shelter is probably a good bet. They need to be saved, they’ve been through who knows what and would appreciate a home, food and a companion that isn’t demanding but not neglectful. Plus most shelters let you sit with the dog first in a sort of interview and you can get a feel for one another. A hyper/worker dog probably would not be for you. Terriers are cool (just not a Jack Russell), a calm dog that can handle space. Yeah, get a mid aged dog that just wants a place to live, someone cool and no other distractions like cats, other dogs.

No toys. Large breeds tend to be mellow but just make certain not to get worker/hyper dogs; shelties, Australian shepherds, labradors, and retrievers.

well if u do get a dog u have to think about this in the dog point of view. if u really love dogs then u dont want to only make urself happy but also the dog happy. i am pretty sure ur dog will feel alone and very bored if he/she was home alone for that many hours.
but i think since u do plan to get a dog walker so the dog will be able to strech it legs then i think it would be ok to get one
since u live in NYC in an apartment and work long hours then u should get a small dog. if u get a big dog they are usually very active and if u are not home all the time and if they dont get enough exercise they can be destructive in ur house since they are bored and will find ways to entertain themselves.
get a small dog like a chi,a poodle/poodle mix, pug, french bulldog, or even any small mix breed dog. also since the dog is alone maybe it would be better if u can afford it to get 2 dogs. they will be company for each other. i am pretty sure that shelte have 2 dogs together that need someone to adopt them b/c they r closely attach to one another. or u could just find to small dogs that r dog friendly.

I think maybe a cat would be a better idea.. they don’t need near as much attention as dogs do. But perhaps if you were thinking about adopting an older dog, maybe 2 or 3 years old, one that is already housebroken, it wouldn’t be such a bad idea. Especially if you are going to have a dog walker. That would be someone to spend some time with your dog while you are away from home so long. If they came maybe 5 hours after you left and stayed with your dog for an hour or so, that would be less stress on the animal.
I don’t think there is really any breed of dog that likes being alone 10 or better hours a day. Almost all dogs adapt to the 8 hour work day, but they really do need human companionship.. dogs get bored and a bored dog can be a destructive dog! Oh and also, you might want to check out the breeds to see which ones are better suited for apartment life, ones that don’t need too much exercise .. Jack Russell Terriers are high energy dogs that need an outlet for all that energy, so there is one breed I wouldn’t recommend.. Just because you live in an apartment, doesn’t mean you need to get a small dog, many of the larger breeds fare well in apartment living! Saint Bernards are one large breed that does well in an apartment. (Although they do need at least one looooong walk during the day!) Newfoundlands are another that do well, but again, need a good walk every day. You don’t say how big your apartment is, or if you wanted a smaller dog, but you can try checking out this site, to see if the dog you are thinking about would do well in your situation.
Good luck!

Any dog will be unhappy being left alone all day until 10 pm at night. A dog walker won’t solve all your problems either unless the dog walker is there all the time, and then the dog may as well belong to the walker.

You will not have enough time to train the dog, as you are rarely home. And really, are you even home all the time on the weekend or as a lawyer does your work run into the weekends as well?

Like others suggested a cat or a small caged animal would probably be a better bet. A puppy would be impossible because they need constant attention and to be let out every 2 hours. Small dogs probably wouldn’t work either because small dogs have small bladders. If you insist on getting a dog a larger, older, very mellow dog would be your best option (with a dog walker). But really being gone that much, I don’t think good breeders would sell you a dog, and shelters probably wouldn’t let you adopt one.

I think you need to think about what is going to be best for the animal, not just your desire to have a dog because you grew up with them.

look into a cat. cats are very independent whereas dogs are social. It would wreck a dog mentally to be left that long, even with a dog walker. Skunks are similar to cats, yes you get them descented from a breeder.
