Why do dogs sometimes hysterically sprint around the house out of nowhere for no apparent reason?

I’ve seen several dogs do this at different locations and times (a Pom-Chi/Eskimo Spitz/Pug). Thankfully they are all smaller dogs! I’ve seen them do it for a few minutes here and there then all of a sudden they seem to just snap out of it.

my dog does this from time to time ’cause he’s excited….either i’ve just gotten home after a longer period of time or he’s been cooped up due to bad weather.
i don’t encourage it but i just kinda ignore him while he flies up and down the stairs. he calms down pretty quickly.

This is done mostly by puppies under a year. 10 minutes of pure madness :)))

Every dog i ever owned has done this. My Maltese did it her whole life, my Aussie mix did it when we fostered her, and my schnauzer mutt does it.
I think it’s a way to release energy when they don’t get their daily walks! Or they do it in spite of daily walks. I swear if my schnauzer mix were any bigger we would have dents in the walls because she uses them as a spring board.

hi i am a vet and doctor! to answer your question….
dogs only do this to show owners and other people around they have energy! usually after your dog does this it should give you a sign to take it for a walk or let it run around out back!
If anybody has any questions about there pet or health just email me at

My rotties will do this right after I towel them off from bathing them. I think they just get this little boost of energy and spaz out for a bit till they wear out.

It’s called the Zoomies. Just get out of the way when they get going. If it is a bigger dog like a Lab, make sure you are out of the way. They can knock you down and keep right on going like you weren’t even there. Then they come back and look at you like “Why are you laying on the ground’?
